The use of Coding Books alongside coding apps and unplugged coding activities to introduce fundamental coding concepts and coding literacy in Second graders
Purpose of this study
To determine the usefulness of anchoring basic concepts of Coding paired with
Coding books for children to engage in coding problem solving activities.
Research question
Will the use of Coding Literacy books for children make coding concepts easier
to understand for second grades students as they apply them to problem solve
in plugged and unplugged coding activities.
Research design
Mixed methods.
Quantive to determine what coding concepts books help them learn, which concepts can they identify and
transfer as they use them in plugged and unplugged activities.
And qualitative as younger students need to state and share which (if any) Coding books helped or
support the understanding of basic coding concepts that need to be applied in coding apps.
Does How to build a Sandcastle or Hello Ruby really help my second graders who are
being exposed to Coding for the first time understand what sequence, loop and
do other basic coding concepts make an instructional impact? Does it help to see fictional setting
and characters their age create a positive engagement learning experience in coding?
Data collection:
A google form with some survey questions, content questions and a qualitative open
ended questions about their favorite coding book
Measurement:
For the quantitative data logic Likert-type scale and for qualitative perhaps the
logics-inductive analysis.
